House of Mirth

More like House of Mustiness actually. Our house has been a source of constant joy and consternation.

We love the playfulness of it, depicted perfectly by these two little munchkins, Kianna and Nate, surrounded by books and made more comfortable by the yellow shag. They were running the length of the house, tickling each other and giggling. Garrett even got a little protective of his daughter!

Then there's the great outdoors, that arresting mass of ivy that defines our house from the outside. Someday we'll strip it bare, but until then, it's where balls get thrown, where deers roam, and where Dan treads lightly to try to stop the sprawl.

Finally, we have a troublesome mold issue, made worse by the lack of good drainage. Of course, this necessitates that much money be spent. We need new windows, new carpeting, and potentially some drywall. Dan's helping us defray some costs by tackling the yard himself.

First he bought a wheel barrow and dug a sizable trench.

Then he built a retaining wall. Yes! My husband built a retaining wall! I'm very proud.

Then he's going to dig out whole chunks of land (clay land) in order to slope the ground away from the house instead of towards, install a french drain, and we'll plant deer-resistant plants to make it all look pretty. I'm exhausted just talking about it! If anyone's up for some hard labor, do let us know :)
